Carlos V Award for Marcelino Oreja

On 9 May, Europe Day, Marcelino Oreja Aguirre will receive the Carlos V European Award in the Monastery of Yuste, Cáceres. The jury granted the award "for his lifelong contribution to the process of European construction and integration, which he has worked towards in the different posts he has held in Spanish and European organisations". Marcelino Oreja has been a Minister of Foreign Affairs, General Secretary of the Council of Europe, and European Commissioner.

He joins a list of recipients of the Carlos V award which includes Jacques Delors, Felipe González, Mikhail Gorbachov, José Manuel Durao Barroso, and Sofia Corradi. The jury of the 11th edition selected Oreja Aguirre from a list of 25 candidates suggested by organisations and institutions in 14 countries.

The award ceremony will be on 9 May, in the Royal Monastery of Yuste, and as in previous editions, it is expected to be presided by a member of the Spanish Royal Family.
