Iberostar Tenerife loses, but is still the leader
Iberostar Tenerife lost 62-65 to Valencia in a match between the first and second place teams in Liga Endesa. Tomorrow, the gold-and-blacks will play the first leg in the quarter-finals of the Basketball Champions League.
In the last five minutes of the second quarter, Valencia went on a 12 to 2 run that meant it finished the quarter in the lead at 20-24. According to Iberostar Tenerife's trainer, Txus Vidorreta, they were lacking fluidity and unable to handle frustration, even though they were winning. Because without a touch of brilliance it's hard to maintain the balance.
These details also explain the result. For example, a triple from 25 meters by San Emeterio was just out of time, and a basket by Kirksay was disqualified for a lane violation at 60-62, with 41 seconds to go.
With two tenths left to play, and 62-65 on the scoreboard, Valencia lost possession, but Iberostar Tenerife did not have time to launch a triple.
Vidorreta does not regret losing the opportunity to create a three-win buffer from the second ranking team, saying that Iberostar Tenerife does not play tactically but to keep having fun.
The gold-and-blacks, who travelled to Lyons today, have already changed course, because tomorrow is the first leg of the Basketball Champions League quarter-finals against Asvel.
