Reading is coming to a standstill in Extremadura, and in Spain as a whole. An alarming statement from editors, which is backed up with data from the CIS. The figures show that 39 per cent of Spaniards did not read a single book in 2015. Not only did the number of readers fall, but also figures for points of sale. It is estimated that around 700 bookshops were closed each year in 2013 and 2014. Surprisingly, more and more books are being published.

The situation is worrying editorials, who are urging the government to implement a national plan to promote reading, in order to allocate more money to libraries and grants for books, to fight against piracy and reduce VAT on e-books.
