8.859 less unemployed people in Extremadura at the end of 2016
The unemployment rate in the region dropped almost 7 per cent between December 2015 and December 2016, leaving a total of 121.136 unemployed people in the region. According to the Ministry, there are 3.041 less unemployed people than the previous month registered at the offices of the Extremaduran Public Employment Service (Sexpe).
2016 marked the greatest registered decrease in unemployment since 1996 in Spain, with a total of 390.000 less unemployed people, almost 9.000 of whom living in Extremadura, which was the autonomous community with the least decrease in unemployment.
The service industry was the sector with the greatest reduction in unemployment in the last month of 2016, with 2.680 less people; followed by agriculture and the group of people without prior employment, with 719 and 510 less unemployed people, respectively. The construction industry, on the other hand, saw an increase of unemployment with almost 900 people more.
A total of 48.350 new contracts were signed in December in Extremadura, 5,13 per cent less the corresponding figure for November and 4,88 per cent more that of the same month last year, although only 1.500 of these contracts were permanent. All the other contracts were temporary.
There is a total of 121.136 unemployed people in Extremadura, the majority of whom, almost 70.000, being women. The employment rate reaches 375.715 people.
