Francisco Núñez Olivera celebrates his 112th birthday today. He is the oldest man in Europe, the third oldest in the world and the oldest war veteran in the history of Spain. Today, homage was paid to him in Bienvenida; his birthplace, where he joined the Armed Forces.

He says the secret to his age is his vegetable-based diet and the affection he receives from family and friends.

Francisco woke up today with a smile on his face, feeling like someone special. He has reached 112 years old, making him one of the most long-lived human beings in the world, after a Japanese man and an Israeli man.

A non-smoker, he has lead a calm life, free of indulgences, and typically has muffins and milk in the morning for breakfast. According to him, all these factors have been the keys to his long life. With recognition from his neighbours, he joined the Armed Forces, having served in the Rif War, and he is the oldest veteran in the Spanish army.
