Once again, patients are most disadvantaged by the lack of staff in the Canary's hospitals and health centres during the summer, according to the trade unions. Only one substitute will be hired for every ten nurses on holiday, and about 200 hospital beds will close. The Canary Islands Association for the Defence of Public Health and the professionals are criticising the Department's decision and warn that many services will remain "below minimum" until September. They say the patients will ultimately pay for this economic decision, because according to the statistics, summer may bring different illnesses but the number of patients remains the same..
