Monday, 23rd February, 1981 is going to be just another day at the Zarzuela Palace. There are no special engagements in King Juan Carlos's diary. The political agenda includes the vote of approval for the new President of the government, after the resignation of Adolfo Suárez, and no surprises are expected.

But at 6:23 that evening, events take an unexpected turn. Just as King Juan Carlos is about to leave his office to play a game of squash with some friends, Lt. Colonel Tejero bursts into Congress and takes the deputies and the entire government hostage, waiting for the arrival of an unnamed military superior.

At the palace, as in the rest of Spain, the first few moments are full of confusion. No one knows what has happened, only that there have been shouts and bursts of machine gun fire, the little that has been heard on the radio, which has been broadcasting the voting live. But it is soon obvious that this is an attempted coup d'etat.
