English Language Broadcast   Schubert's 'Winterreise' at the Teatro de la Zarzuela 11/02/2021 32:25

The Austrian baritone Florian Boesch was in Madrid recently to give a recital of Franz Schubert's "Winterreise" (Winter Journey) at the Zarzuela Theater. Made up of two dozen "Lieder" (songs), "Winterreise" is one of the Austrian composer's three great song-cycles, the other two being "Die Schöne Müllerin" (The Fair Maid of the Mill) and "Schwanengesang" (Swan Song). To create "Winterreise," Schubert set to music 24 poems by Wilhelm Müller. Today's program is the first of three in which we will hear "Winterreise" in its entirety, as performed by another leading baritone, Matthias Goerne. Goerne, who is German, also sings frequently in Madrid and elsewhere in Spain and has appeared nearly every year for the past two decades at the Zarzuela. At his recital Florian Boesch was accompanied at the piano by Justus Zeyen. Matthias Goerne is accompanied in his recording by Christoph Eschenbach.
