English Language Broadcast   Not Invisible: Descendants of Spanish Immigrants in the USA 01/02/2020 53:43

The project "Invisible Immigrants: Spaniards in the United States 1868 to 1945" is now in its tenth year. NYU Professor James Fernández and Spanish journalist Luis Argeo have carried their idea through various manifestations, a book, two documentaries, a radio-play, and now an exhibition at Madrid's Conde Duque Cultural Center. But the heart of their project remains the descendants of the Spaniards who emigrated to the US. It is with them that they've shared memories, exchanged stories and histories, and formed a community reaching from all corners of the US. Professor Fernández and Luis Argeo, through their years of research have been able to help many of these descendants identify the long-forgotten historical circumstances that produced a piece of family memorabilia stored in a cookie tin for generations. The descendants, for their part, sharing their memories, stories, photographs and experiences, have made the project possible.
As the exhibition mainly consists of the pictures and objects the descendants have given on loan, many were present at the opening. The next day, I was joined in the RNE studio by Laura Goyanes, Tony Carreño, Gloria López, Mike Muñoz and Cathy Varón: my guests for today's show.
The exhibition can been seen in Madrid until April 12. Shortly we'll be broadcasting our report on that remarkable show and its contents. Stay tuned.
