The old iron bridge in Mérida, sponsored by students

The students from the Pablo Neruda school have chosen this railway bridge from the 19th century, built on the Guadiana River. They're participating in the "Adopt a Monument" programme organised by the Town Council and the Teacher Centre in Mérida.

ADOPTA UN MONUMENTO, PUENTE DE HIERRO

It is the only railway bridge in Extremadura made completely from iron. Its striking structure rests on 10 columns. It spans 605 meters over the Guadiana River. And it's still in use: it belongs to the line joining the capital of Extremadura with the south of Spain. An important engineering work of assembled metal frameworks commissioned in 1883.
