Like many other state broadcasters in Europe, Spanish Radio and Television (RTVE), of which Radio Exterior forms a part, has a house orchestra and chorus. The RTVE Symphony Orchestra and Chorus is headquartered at the Teatro Monumental in central Madrid, and during the season offers weekly public concerts featuring a wide range of classical works from Baroque to modern. The RTVE Symphony Orchestra was established in 1965, and its first music director was Antoni Ros-Marbà. Its current music director is the Uruguayan-born conductor Carlos Kalmar. The RTVE Chorus was established in 1950, its first conductor was Roberto Plà and its current conductor is Jordi Casas Bayer.

To find out how my musical colleagues are faring in today's context of financial crisis, in which things are not easy even for a well-established symphony orchestra and chorus such as ours, I paid a visit to the Teatro Monumental, where I spoke to cellist Suzana Stefanovich, violinist Michael Pearson, and baritone Pablo Caneda. The music featured in the program is by Anton Bruckner, the Austrian composer's "Intermezzo and Trio for Two Violins, Two Violas and Cell in D Minor" and the opening movements of his "Mass no. 3 in F Minor," a work to be performed this week by the RTVE Symphony Orchestra and Chorus (01/05/13).
