In an industry arguably still dominated by men, we speak to two powerful female figures from the performing arts, Joyce Henderson and Briony Lavery.

Joyce Henderson trained at Jacques Lecoq’s famous physical theatre school in Paris. She went on to work for world-renowned theatre company Complicité and her theatre work encompasses directing, directing movement and teaching. As an actress her credits include films like The Queen, About a Boy and Suffragettes.

Another powerful female figure in the theatre world in the UK is Briony Lavery. Her plays include A Wedding Story, Last Easter and Her Aching Heart whilst her play Frozen was produced on Broadway where it was nominated for four Tony Awards.

We caught up with Joyce Henderson at Madrid’s Teatro Real where she’d come to give a series of theatre workshops. We spoke to Briony Lavery at the premiere of her adaptation for the stage of Robert Louis Stevenson’s novel “Treasure Island”, translated into Spanish by José Luis Collado and performed by La Joven Compañía at Madrid’s Conde Duque cultural centre.
