Chavela

American filmmakers Catherine Gund and Daresha Kyi presented their documentary Chavela in Berlin before it arrived in Madrid's Cineteca, where I was able to speak with Daresha Kyi after the screening.  Holding the film's center is an interview Gund recorded with Chavela Vargas in Mexico in 1991, at a critical turning point in the 71 year old singer's life and career.  Based on archival photos and early recordings, as well as interviews with the people who knew Chavela, at her best and her worst, the film provides an intelligent and sensitive portrait of a complex and compelling human being.
