English Language Broadcast   Aranjuez Festival director Javier Estrella, II 21/06/2019 33:00

In the second part of a two-part interview, Aranjuez Early Music Festival director Javier Estella tells Justin Coe about the surprise that was in store for the audience at the Festival's very first concert. He also talks about early music (in Spanish, música antigua) in Spain back when he established the Festival two and a half decades ago and early music in Spain today, calling the very few early music interpreters of back then his "heroes." The program includes several pieces of 18th-century music recorded in Aranjuez by harpsichordist Silvia Márquez and by the festival orchestra, La Compañía del Príncipe. Aranjuez, under the baton of Pablo Heras-Casado, today one of Spain's most internationally famous orchestra conductors. And we also hear two different versions of the classic jazz tune by Benny Goodman and Lionel Hampton that sparked Javier Estrella's lifelong passion for this rather more modern type of music.
