The Spanish government's proposed new Citizens' Security Law includes a clause which seeks to make legal the summary deportations of would-be immigrants and refugees trying to enter the country illegally. The Human Rights commissioner for the Council of Europe recently visited the Spanish enclave of Melilla in North Africa where many of these "push backs" by security forces are common practice. Oxfam has published a report showing that 80 individuals possess the wealth of some 3.5 billion people. A Spanish representative of the international charity insists that the growing economic inequality is "not inevitable but rather the result of political choices." A major corruption case in Spain is finally going to trial, with the state prosecutor calling for jail terms as long as 125 years.
