LOYKO is based in St Petersburg. While Russian Roma music has always remained the basis of the ensemble’s artistic work, LOYKO’s musical spectrum has continuously expanded in sound and style through encounters with Celtic music and traditional Romanian and Hungarian music as well as classical music and flamenco.
The group has released 13 CDs and DVDs and a number of compilations, featuring not only traditional gypsy songs arranged by the group, but also compositions by S. Erdenko. They also have written music for a number of films and played in some of them.
Sergey Erdenko was born in Khabarovsk; his parents were well-known gypsy musicians. He picked up a fiddle for the first time at four. In two years he was performing on stage with his elder brother Nikolay. In 1990, after a theatrical career, Sergey founded LOYKO in London, which critics later called the leading gypsy group in the world.
Artur Gorbenko was born in Leningrad and studied violin at a music school and viola and piano at a music college. After graduating from the Conservatory he spent eight years as a composer and arranger of songs and music for TV programmes and resumed playing the violin in various ensembles, concentrating on improvisation, jazz in particular.
Michael Savichev was born in Novosibirsk and studied classical guitar at the Novosibirsk Conservatory and he was playing in his jazz fusion group “UC”. After 2000 he joined the group of a famous flamenco performer Tomás de Madrid and spent a few years in Spain studying flamenco in Seville and Cordoba. His unique guitar is a patented blend of gypsy traditions of Russia and Spain.
